By the end of 2022, the agencies will transfer €23,687 to the Ukrainian presidential charity fund UNITED24.

Red Dot Award VS drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

To become a winner of the Red Dot Award is not cheap. Unlike other design and creative festivals, where participants need to pay only for submissions, this one requires the redeeming of the award in the case of victory. The submission at Red Dot starts at €200 and can be up to €500. There are three stages of selection, so the agencies have to pay around €1,000 only for participation. This year, due to the full-scale war Russia launched against Ukraine, the Red Dot committee granted all Ukrainian agencies with free submissions, but did not cancel the winning fee. It is about so-called Winner Package that costs from €1,700 to €6,000 depending on the level of the award.

So the winners from Ukraine decided to decline the Red Dot awards and donate the money to the Ukrainian Army instead.

“We appreciate Red Dot committee’s recognition and their decision to give us three free submissions to the festival this year. But since free submissions do not cover the Winner Packages we can’t redeem them. It seems inappropriate to invest the funds needed by the country at war even in awards. Even the prestigious ones,”

The agencies have already informed the Red Dot organizers about their decision with the following joint letter: 

“Red Dot, thanks and see you after the victory. The most important victory for us now”,

the Ukrainians said, meaning the victory of Ukraine in the war against Russia.

Petcube

The awards were given for two models of pet cameras: Petcube Bites 2 and Play 2, released in 2019. The innovative design was created by Ozero studio, which separated from Petcube but is engaged in the design of the company’s products.

Petcube Bites 2 can record Full-HD videos, has a 160° wide-angle view, and treat dispenser, which “throws” pieces of dry food at different distances. Amazon Alexa’s voice assistant is also built into the camera. In Petcube Play 2, the company changed the mechanical platform and made laser movements smoother.

In 2018, Petcube Bites of the first generation were already awarded the Red Dot Award for the best product design.

Jammy

Jammy is a portable digital MIDI guitar that fits in your backpack. When connected to a DAW (digital audio workstation) on your computer or smartphone, it can sound like any instrument. The guitar can be directly connected to headphones or a guitar amplifier.

Jammy received the Red Dot Award for its futurism and references to guitar classics in design, as well as its modular design.

The work has won the Red Dot: Best of the Best in the category of Packaging Design. Spiilka named the ice cream “MO?” from the first two letters of the Ukrainian word “морозиво” [Editor’s note: morozyvo – ice cream] and it’s “an invitation to eat something sweet”. The packages are made in monochrome colors depending on the taste of the product.

The agency receives the award for the second consecutive year. Last year, Spiilka was awarded for the corporate identity for the educational project “Maibutni”.

AB Games was awarded for its logo and visual identity. One of the peculiarities of the work is the hidden word “LOVE” in the logo. The company notes that developers describe their feelings to their work by this word. AB Games representatives say that they became the first game studio to receive the Red Dot Award.

AB Games has its offices in Kyiv, Rivne, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Cyprus and is best known for its game Hidden City.

• Within the project, iden.team created the naming, logo, and identity of the service.
• In the center of the project is a character called Yeppi “that according to a story is so old that it knows all the experiences and now it wants to share them.”
• Interestingly, the agency iden.team has been on the market for less than a year.

As part of the project, Fedoriv has developed the positioning, design concept, service model, content, and communication. The agency says that “The changes have been applied to product, service, and approach to management.”

New petrol stations are located in Kyiv, region, as well as other locations. Ukrnafta promised to unveil a “few dozen” new stations by the end of the year 2018.

Among the winning projects are:

• Advertising for the goodwine loyalty program (Brand Design and Identity, Best of the best);
• Promotion of Brave! Factory Festival (Brand Design and Identity and Film and Animation, Best of the best);
• Rebranding of the National Art Museum of Ukraine (Coprorate Design and Identity);
• Advertising campaign for OLX (Film and Animation);
• Project with hiitworks (Corporate Design and Identity).

Last year, banda won seven Red Dot Awards and was recognized as the agency of the year.

bird is a freeware that allows you to search for an apartment to rent in Kyiv. The key differences are aggregation from several sources and a visually compelling 3D map.

The project kicked off in December 2018. Its creators are designer Arsenii Feshchenko and developer Yevhenii Pancheshnyi.

bird is a unique application. We tailored it specifically for apartment search in Kyiv without thinking about the international Red Dot Award. In order to increase the chances of winning, we decided to participate in two categories at once – Applications and Interfaces. It was so nice to see that we received awards in both.

Currently, bird has about 60,000 installs. The app creators are not planning to rest on their laurels:

In the near future, we want to redesign the filters, add infrastructure facilities (schools, kindergartens, shops, playgrounds) to the map, update the bird mascot of the application, which accompanies the user in their search for the one and only apartment.

The authors of the project are designers Vlad Taran and Oksana Lashko. Their project is a one-page website featuring the story of the life and work of a British director. Designers worked on Kubrick.Life for a year, collecting information from open sources, documentaries, and also communicating with people who were familiar with Kubrick. The project is dedicated to the 90th birthday of the director.

Telegraf.design notes that the authors sought to make each section of the website such that it conveyed emotions and sensations as if the person was indeed watching the original film. That is how the color coding and noise on the screen similar to the picture of an old TV came about.

Previously, Kubrick.Life received The Webby Awards 2019, Site Of The Day by AWWWARDS and FWA of the day awards. Recently, the project has been evaluated by the Red Dot jury under the Brands & Communication Design category.

Nuka

Nuka is a startup that came up with the technology of the “eternal” pencil. The idea of the product belongs to three founders of the startup: Mykyta Vladykin, Kateryna Mykhalko, and Eugene Shylo.

The point is that the writing part of the pencil itself is not made of a slate, but of a metal alloy. It writes just like a regular pencil, it can be erased with an eraser, it does not crumble and does not stain hands. Studio Concepter provided the startup with acceleration services and the development of an industrial design. The prize was given to Concepter, but the co-founder Vlad Tislenko emphasizes that this is common merit.

As Evgenia Medvedeva from Concepter said, a whole team participated in the product design. Project Manager Yegor Kurguzov found information about Red Dot Young Professionals Application Day: young designers are given a chance one day a year (on December 5, 2018) to win one of 50 preferential places and fight for the main Red Dot award.

“We were very pleased that we made it to the list of these fifty lucky ones, because besides the free application, in case of victory, the winner pack will also be free in the main competition (which is about 4,000 euros),” says Evgenia.

The prototype of the pencil needed to be created very quickly, while it had to be of very high quality. CTO Concepter Serhiy Shcherbakov helped with this, who quickly found a factory in China, where he worked on the prototype. It was sent immediately from China to Germany, so the team was a little nervous because the finished prototype was seen only in the photo. But as a result, it won the Red Dot Award Product Design 2019.

Whooshi

One of the finalists was the Ukrainian project — the portable amplifier of the Whooshi, as well as Nuka, one of the CES participants of this year.

This is a device for listening to music that improves sound quality and also makes the owner’s wired headphones wireless. The device has its own application, which adjusts the sound to the user’s preference, as well as the built-in equalizer.

Interia

Not only high-tech Ukrainian projects received design awards. For example, the Ukrainian brand of baby beds “with ears” Mickey, Tom and Zaya. As the name suggests, each of the beds received “ears” from the corresponding character. They are produced by Interia studios. They look like this:

Also, Honorable Mention (incentive prize) from Red Dot was awarded to stylish Ukrainian backpacks from the brand kofta, more precisely, the Imago series, named after the developmental stage of the insect larva and looking correspondingly.
